in Japanese swords the hamon needs a jigane that will support the shape desired..a small grain pattern hada to support a suguha hamon and a - larger itami or mokume hada for choji midari gunome exct. i bet its valuable information for the serious hamon enthusiast..lol and if you have a good eye for heat you can make a choji hamon without clay!..and if you get the heat soak just right utsuri may be present....

Cat litter works well as filler for the weight bags. Double duty, if you own a cat. In an emergency the litter can serve to tasks.

Coat your crucibles in refractory lime. There's a lot of phosphorous in cast iron. I've seen Foundry men in kerela do it. Also, peletize your iron. Even if it doesn't melt, the carbon difussion rate is a function of surface area.

Great design ! At this date ( November 2023) it’s gone through three generations : camillus, meyeco and Darrell Ralph. Then there were the camillus black ops ( cousins ) . Made in the smaller versions too ( like the mini cqb) . I wonder how long it will be before we see a fourth rendering of the cqb?

This is not how they were made your in the ballpark but just too modern. It would have been casted but also hammered to final shape and hardened the blade too. The tang wouldn’t be just cylindrical but conical to aid in the strength of the shaft and pinned into place. I’m sure if they had your tools back then it would have been made that way because it’s fast but the durability is compromised.
